Funds in Mauritius require approval from the Financial Services Commission before they commence business. They can be structured as a company, protected cell company (PCC), a trust or a limited partnership. The two types of funds in Mauritius are namely the open-ended funds (with variable share capital and falls under the Collective Investment Scheme “CIS” category) and close-ended funds “CFEs” (with fixed share capital and also known as private equity funds).
The exclusive purpose of a CIS is the collective investment of funds in a portfolio of securities or financial assets, real property or non-financial assets. The operation of a CIS is based on the principle of risk diversification. Types of CIS are: Global Scheme, Professional CIS, Specialized CIS and Expert Fund.
Private Equity Funds are vehicles used to raise finance through a pooling process from investors. Investments are made in non-listed or tradeable companies, in the form of equity or debt.
